About the Role: We seek a dedicated and passionate Director of Dance to join our team. Under the supervision of the Director of the Academy and APAC Artistic Director, you will play a crucial role in the development, growth, and leadership of dance education at Axelrod Performing Arts Academy. The Director of Dance will be responsible for the successful creation and implementation of a redesigned Dance curriculum and college/professional preparatory program. The ability to communicate professionally, warmly, and inclusively with various stakeholders is essential to this position. 

About APAA: 

Axelrod Performing Arts Academy is a performing arts academy based out of the Axelrod Contemporary Ballet studio at Bell Works, in Holmdel, NJ. The APAA is the educational branch of the professional Axelrod Performing Arts Center (Deal, NJ) and AXCBT.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Extensive experience, broad understanding, and passion for various forms of dance – with experience in Ballet and Modern Dance (10 + years of teaching experience)
  • Professional choreography experience 
  • Strong connection to a professional community of artists as potential guest artists and industry support opportunities (strong dance network connections, especially in NY & NYC)
  • Two – five years of administrative experience/management experience
  • Ability to collaborate to develop programmatic outcomes that support the strategic direction of the academy 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate in a team environment

Essential Duties + Responsibilities 

  • Create and implement a redesigned dance curriculum (Primary through Pre-Pro)
  • Assist in creating an overall vision for the dance program that aligns with the strategic direction of APAA
  • Staff appropriate teachers
  • Teach 1-2 classes a week
  • Chose artists for master classes
  • Staff a rehearsal director who works in connection with Director of AXCBT/Choreographers during ballets (project by project basis if needed - this role entails working with academy students participating in the ballets - requires mostly weekends and evenings during tech)
  • Support all APAA programmatic events (special performances, open houses, showcases, etc) as required. 

Current breakdown of APAA Dance

Pre-Professional (12+) Designed to create versatile dancers who seek to continue dancing in college, on Broadway, or in a professional company. Students take weekly classes in ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, partnering, and pointe. Pre-Professional Dance students also have the opportunity to audition for Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater's professional productions, rehearsing with APAA + AXCBT Director, Gabriel Chajnik, and the professional dancers of AXCBT.

Junior Division (8-12) is designed for students to establish a strong foundation in dance. Students learn technique and discipline and begin to cultivate their artistry. 

Primary Division (3-7) helps young students discover their love for the arts through the exploration of movement and song. Students are exposed to performing arts by learning in a fun, individualized way.
